In 2016 I had a taste of that sensation sweeping the nation called mud runs, or OCR’s (Obstacle Course racing). It is a course (usually 5k to 5-6 miles) where you run and are greeted by a variety of obstacles to accomplish. This is meant to challenge yourself both mentally and physically and in some cases, build camaraderie with fellow runners in helping you achieve something you may not otherwise do. I had decided I will be doing the more popular ones in Florida this year and do a write up about them. It all started on Feb 11th in Clermont, Florida caller The Warrior Dash.
Warrior Dash started in 2009 and has been building popularity every year since. It is a 5k mud run that is considered one of the easier OCR’s, but the biggest party afterwards. It is also the only one you get a fuzzy warrior hat along with your medal for showing off. The course itself was a challenge for me at the first mile when you hit the water. you actually had to swim to a buoy and swim to the land after that short rest in between. That totally sapped all the energy I had. I can only be thankful this February weather was in the 70’s that day.
After wards the course went on to challenge leg and arm strength, as well as your ability to climb in various situations. Like up a slanted wall using a rope or one of their new obstacles called Bridge the Gap. It all ended with a climb up a cargo net and a slide into the water. Yes, get me washed off as I cross the finish line. WRONG. Muddy Mayhem stands between you and the finish line to be greeted by one of those volunteers at the end to put that medal around your muddy self.
The packet pickup was well organized as well as the bag drop and pickup. I really liked how this was a cashless event and the organizers included parking and bag drop with the amount you paid for the race. It is really the first OCR race I have been to or read about where I did not feel like I am getting nickel and dimed once at the event. The location itself was awesome for the run. The parking, even though there was plenty of room … it did feel like I walked 2k’s to get from my vehicle to the festival area.
The festival itself presented a lot of areas for photo opportunities as well as corn hole, sample obstacle areas, alcohol, and an area that had bourbon. It really was a post race party that could have gone on well into the evening I am sure. The volunteers were nothing but spectacular both at the festival and on the course. There was a lot of encouragement and high fives during the run and when needed, I have even seen a couple of them assist at various obstacles. The Warrior Dash is a perfect race to start the year knowing the more difficult ones are up and coming. I really give it a HIGH THUMBS UP because of the course itself, which is designed to be doable, yet, fun. The party after wards is unsurpassed.
If you have not signed up and this event is in your area, I do recommend you take advantage whether it is a warm up for something like the Tough Mudder or Bonefrog, or just a break to get muddy with friends and have a lot of fun. Also, PARTY AFTER WARDS WEARING YOUR FUZZY HAT!!!!!!
Here is my personal run of the Warrior Dash 2017:
Next stop is The Savage Race in Florida on March 18th-19th. Seeking people to run with still (10am wave). I like that I got to meet a lot of fun people at the Dash and looking forward to new firends throughout the year. I also welcome opinions or challenges or various OCR courses in the Florida area you think I should try and review/promote.
