The Smuggler Is One Of A Kind

The Smuggler premiered last week at Urbanite Theatre in Sarasota. This play, written by Ronan Noone, is about an Irish immigrant Tim Finnegan who wants to be a writer in America but struggles to find his path. That all changes when a stranger arrives with a plan to make people “disappear and reappear.” In this mischievous, one-man, rhyming-verse dark comedy, Tim learns the price he must pay to become an American. Step into his secret speakeasy to hear a twisty story with unsavory characters and shady shenanigans.

I found this to be a marvelous and ingenious play. Giles Davies totally took on the character of Tim Finnegan in what seemed to be an effortless performance. I challenge you to find a monologue with 9k words, all in rhyme, in an Irish accent, and while he is preparing and serving drinks. This was absolutely a treat. The closest I have ever seen to such a performance was from when I saw The Royal Shakespeare Company perform at Stratford-Upon-Avon. The difference being Giles is doing and relying all upon himself where a company has the support of others on stage.

The story was also well-written. The 70 minute play never slowed down in a way to lose interest. Ronan Noone found a way to keep the audience engrossed while telling every aspect of the story. Humor, adventure, criminal activities? Yes, it is all there as well as a nod to the meaning of family and its importance to an individual who supplies for it.

The Smuggler will be playing through Feb 20th and it is one I would ask you not to miss if you enjoy the intimacy of a small theater with a play that is written and acted upon in a way you may never see again. Early shows have been selling out so it is advised to get your tickets in advance at Urbanite Theatre’s Ticket Site.
