Stageworks Theater 2019 Premiere
Last week was the world premiere of the play Ready Steady Yeti Go and you have 2 weekends left to see this play involving some major social issues that children go through today. This play explores the themes of middle-school bullying, racism, personal safety, and the parent / child relationship.
The story is about Goon befriending Carly Uhlenbeek, the only black girl in school. Things start to go south when bad parental advice, passive-aggressive acts, and ill-formed gestures of kindness create a “White Guilt Perfect Storm” that threatens to drown their relationship. All of this happens in the aftermath of a hate crime.
This play is charming and funny with a sharp edge of heartbreaking truth. It’s clever, moving and ingenious. It takes on our assumptions about people’s character and the painful sacrifices we make for love and family. At its heart though it is an uplifting story about young star-crossed lovers wrapped in a comedy wrapped in a satire with a healthy streak of political commentary.
There are only 2 weekends left to see this play written by David Jacobi and directed by Dan Granke. The final showtimes are Feb 15th-17th and Feb 22nd-24rth, with 2 shows on Saturday. This will be presented at Stageworks, Tampa’s longest-running professional theater company, and Ready Steady Yeti Go is the first main stage production of 2019.
